Plato's Closet

Has anybody ever heard of Plato's Closet? I hadn't until about 2 weeks ago when my friend Sarah told me about it. Anyway, last night I went with her to try it out. And I was quite impressed! Plato's Closet is a store that buys and sells gently used, name brand clothing items for teenager to twenty-something girls and guys. You basically take in a bag of clothes that you want to sell to them and they will take it, evaluate it, and then give you a quote for it within about 20 minutes. If you agree to their quote, they will give you cash for your clothing. Read more about it here. They don't accept greatly worn items or items that are older than 2 years old (they can tell how old it is by the labels on the clothing), so you're sort of limited to what you can take in, but it's totally worth it if you have anything that fits into this category. And if you're not sure how old it is, take it in anyway. The worst they can do is send it back home with you.

Sarah took in a bag last night and they bought about 5 items from her and gave her $23. They made her take about 5 items back home with her because they didn't meet the criteria, but I'd say that's a pretty good amount of money for only 5 items of used clothing! Anyway, if you're looking to make a little money on some of your clothes, try it out. I was impressed. And you can still donate what they don't buy from you to the D.I. or Salvation Army so you can get those warm fuzzies inside, if that's what you're worried about.

I took in my stuff last summer. 3 huge Old Navy bags worth. But my clothes were just under 2 years old and they wouldn't accept them. I should have taken my maternity clothes in (they were bought more recently). I still bought my maternity stuff at AE - I just went up a size. (Hey when you get 40% off - you would do the same) Anywho, apparently the Draper store gets lots of traffic so they are even more picky. Dang rich girls. However, they did buy the pair of Steve Madden shoes I brought in that were like 4 years old - weeiiiirrrd.

I will probably try it again though. I go through clothes like its nobody's business....well not as quickly as Layla probably ;) But we know she wouldn't step foot in there.

Yeah, Sarah said that she was positive some of the clothes they did buy from her were older than 2 years old. The girl said that clothing stores change their labels every year and that's how they know how old the items are...But, I don't know how true that is. I've never noticed labels being different from year to year. Interesting. Well, I guess it's worth a shot. If I do it anytime soon, I'll let you know if they take any of my clothes. They probably won't because I don't have any fashion sense. :)

The labels do change every year...at least they do at AE; I think they might even change every season. For instance last years jeans at American Eagle Outfitters sewn into the top seem on the inside of the jeans. I have no idea if that made sense? And their shirts change from having no labels (just printed on the inside of their tees in print), to printed, but in cursive to having big labels to having small labels. So just subtle changes, if that makes sense. I guess you could just go look at your clothes and see. I will stop rambling now.

How funny...I just brought clothes there on Thursday! There's another place down here that is like Plato's and the chick who runs it is WAY picky. The name is like Christines or something like that. Anyway, she only takes like True Religion Jeans and Citizens of Humanity etc...it is pretty lame. And then she sells everything for almost retail, so it is totally a sham.

PLATOS CLOSET IS WORTHLESS!! I went to two different stores with three bins of clothing, about 80% name brand ranging from Old Navy, Abercrombie, AE to Tommy Hilfiger, Banana Republic, Calvin Klein and BCBG. They said they had to pass on everything even though some items were new with the tags still on. They gave me some BS about the tags being old but to me it's nothing short of stupid not to accept something that looks like a brand new style just because it's past season. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!
